I have been using cloth diapers for some time now. I am curious if you have encountered and used soap nuts? What do you think of them?
We also have a 2.5 year old that is on disposables, every time I have tried to use cloth with him he ends up with what looks like burns on his skin. I have tried wet pail, dry pail, stripped them, used Rockin’ Green. So I am just hoping to potty train him this summer. Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Jill, I haven’t tried soap nuts. I’d be happy to try them as a product review and giveaway if a company offers though. ;)

As for your little one, a few questions: 1) what type of dipes were you using (prefolds, AIOs, etc)? 2) did the rash happen each time you switched detergent? In other words, the rash occurred with each detergent you used? 3) Does the rash go completely away in disposables?

Thanks for asking! ;)

We make our own laundry detergent and always use vinegar as a rinse for regular laundry. Below is the recipe (we do not use the essential oils for fragrance). Would this be acceptable for use to wash diapers?

4 Cups – hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup – Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

Elizabeth, I do think it will be an acceptable detergent for cloth diapers. Plenty of families use homemade detergent for diapers with great success, however others struggle with homemade detergent.

Homemade detergent seems to throw an extra variable into the whole washing routine. Just a word of caution. :)

In general, the softer your water, the better your results with homemade detergent will be.
