During my 7 years of marriage, I have changed our sheets almost every Monday.
I love clean sheets. I worked the night shift as a registered nurse for 9 years, and there is no better feeling than getting to slide into clean sheets after being up for 24 hours. It is true bliss.
But our sheet schedule is not working for us any longer.
This is what my hallway looks like most Monday mornings:
What you can’t see in this picture is the 6-10 loads of laundry from my clients sitting in my bonus room just through that door.
(Yes, it is overwhelming even to me and I actually enjoy laundry.)
So my 5+ loads in the hallway plus my clients’ loads equal around 15 or so loads.
So why do I continue to change bedding on Monday morning and add to this chaos??
Over the past two weeks, I’ve been really mulling over the way I run my house. What is working and the things that are definitely not working for us. It is not working for me to change bedding on Monday morning any longer. The sheets were sitting in the hallway (or my little laundry room floor) until I could get to them on Thursday or Friday. And that was super annoying to me.
So I’ve changed my method: all bedding is now changed on Thursdays here at the Hill House. And it is washed on Thursday, which is my Linen Laundry Day.
This is the beginning of a beautiful system….really, it is.
What is not working in your laundry system?
Is it so out of control that you don’t know where to start? Can’t get clothes put away? Is your laundry room so disorganized you can’t find anything?
Take a few moments today to reflect on your current laundry system.
Resolve to make one small change that will make things easier on yourself. And then go do it!
Feel free to leave your biggest laundry dilemmas in the comments or shoot me an email.

I understand trying to do all the laundry in one day, or even all the bedding in one day, can be overwhelming, especially when you have several kids. I struggled with this myself for a long time, but I now have a weekly laundry schedule which works for my schedule and family pretty well. Sometimes it gets tiresome because I have to do laundry daily, but I find that better than marathon sessions, or calls from the kids down the stairs saying, “I don’t have any clean underwear!”
By the way, I just found your blog and have really been enjoying it! Keep up the good work. Your content is really great.
Let me start by saying, how absolutly clever to have a blog dedicated to laundry!
I am a mom to five boys (from 10 yrs to 9 months old) who accumulate TONS of laundry. Myhusband is guilty as well.
My husband is constantly upset about our laundry situation. I can not keep up. It overwhelms me. Ever since the baby was born it has thrown a wrench in my laundry gears even more.
I try hard to wash and dry at least one load of laundry per day. The folding and hanging and putting it away just never makes it into my day with all these kids. I have inlisted the chidlrens’ help before, but that is not consistant either. Mating socks is the dreaded chore…. they usually are just thrown into a sock basket which makes for lots of fun in the monrings as we get ready for school and fight over finding matching socks.
I have blogged about it…. http://fourcrazychildren.blogspot.com/2009/11/dear-laundry.html.
Your blog just might be my answer. And maybe, just maybe, I won’t pull my hair out after all.
Oh Crystal… I am so glad you stopped by!
I can imagine the laundry that 5 boys generate. And it is a LOT. I have three little ones and it seems after each new baby has arrived that our laundry has not doubled, but tripled.
How is that possible?!
I’m working hard on trying to get a few posts going on how to create and keep up with a good laundry routine.
Hopefully quite a few posts on it will be up in the next 2 weeks.
Not being able to figure out a laundry routine seems like a common problem for us mamas!
Oh, my gosh! You are amazing! We’re lucky if the sheets get changed every two weeks around here! You’ve inspired me. I’m going to change them now!
Oh I’m so glad!
Yes, I am on it with the laundry.
The rest of the house? Yikes. Then again, it’s Monday morning as I look around and it always looks like a tornadic event has occurred on Mondays…
Thanks for stopping by 🙂 Can’t wait to meet you at Blissdom!
I am not even going to admit publicly going to admit how often we get the sheets changed around here. I desperately need a schedule.
