One of my readers, Linda, needed to make a laundry item for a graduation gift. A friend’s son was going off to college and wasn’t exactly well-versed in the fine art of washing clothes.
So Linda, being the crafty girl that she is, made up this piggy bank for all of the spare change that is found while washing clothes. And I do believe it is one of the cutest things I’ve seen lately!
In case you can’t see the verse clearly, it reads:
Laundry Loot
If you find a shiny coin
When doing laundry chores,
Put it in this little bank
And claim the coin as yours.
Pretty soon you’ll be amazed
At just how much you’ve made,
This is the ONLY household task
For which you will get paid.

I love how it keeps all of the random laundry change in one place. There are times when just a few dollars or cents comes in handy: tipping the pizza guy, last-minute lunch money for school, etc.
And change adds up quickly! You could always set a family goal of “when we reach x amount of dollars, we’ll use it on x.” Pay down a specific debt, treat the family to ice cream or add to the vacation fund.
If you are looking to make a frugal laundry gift for a friend, I imagine this can be made for just a few dollars. Linda wrote that she used an old Tootsie Roll container to make the bank. Print the label on your own printer and you’ve got a fairly easy-to-make gift that cost less than $5 to make!
Get started today and you could have them ready by Christmas!
Are you crafty? Do you have a great laundry gift idea, either bought or homemade? Leave it in the comments or send it to me in an email at [email protected]. I’d love to feature it in an upcoming post!
Linda doesn’t have a blog (yet), but she does run a website which raises money for cancer research. Check her out over at Combat Cancer if you have a few minutes. Thanks again for such a fabulous, frugal idea!
