I have made my own laundry soap for a little while now. I got a recipe off the internet and have found that it works for me with a little tweaking. It involves borax, washing soda (not baking soda) and fels naptha soap. http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2008/04/09/making-your-own-laundry-detergent-a-detailed-visual-guide/ This is where I found it and it really works. I am new to blogs, etc so I hope this helps someone. The whole process takes about and hour and your soap has to sit overnight but you can make it in 3 gallon increments and certainly if you have enough buckets you can make as much as you want ahead of time. It is kind of cool to tell my friends that I make my own soap. Sometimes they laugh but thats ok. I really enjoy your blog and look forward to reading it now that I found it.
Carrie, thanks so much for sharing your link! You’re right in that it’s helpful to have several detergent recipes and then tweak the one that fits your family the best (hence the round-up!).
AFA friends laughing….well, I could write you a whole novel about things I could be laughed at for! You are not alone. 🙂

Hi Lauren,
Just wondering about 2 things….
1. Can these homemade detergents be used in HE washers?
2. I’m assuming that you still need to use fabric softener?
Thanks,
Stacey
Hi Stacey,
1. I’ve done lots of looking around on the internet and it seems the general consensus is that you can use these homemade detergents in your HE washers. But you’ll definitely need to use a lesser amount. Most of these detergents are very low-sudsing, which is fabulous for HE machines. But also remember that the HE front-loaders also use quite a bit less water. So lessen the amount of detergent for that reason. A lot of extra detergent = hard to rinse out.
**But it WILL void your warranty if you use a homemade detergent. Regardless of whether you encounter a problem with your machine not caused by detergent. It still voids the warranty.
2. Yes, you still need to use fabric softener. If you like that kind of thing (some people are very anti-fabric softener).
Great questions – thanks!
