Bath Towels should be relatively easy to fold, right? It is a rectangle after all. How hard can that be?
It’s true that bath towels are one of the easier items to fold…but there is a great way to fold them that make them sit and stack beautifully on the shelf.
I’m using a small bath towel in these pictures. And this method also works well for a regular, average size towel. I have a great method for bath sheets and beach towels I’ll post later.
First, lay your towel flat with the seam side down. The raw edge should be facing up. Smooth the towel as flat as possible with your hands.
Next, fold the bottom third of the towel towards the middle. This doesn’t have to be exact – just an eyeball measurement is fine. Smooth towel again with your hands.
Fold the top third of the towel so it meets the bottom edge.
Pick up the right side of the towel and fold all the way over to the left side. Smooth again.
Lastly, fold towel one more time from right to left.
When placing towels on the shelf, stack them with the rounded edge facing out. When you pull it off the shelf you pull out only the towel you’d like, instead of inadvertently pulling other towels down also.
Do you have trouble with towel storage? What’s your biggest towel storage dilemma?

Lauren, how do you get a mildew smell out of dark colored towels?
Honestly? It can be tough. Here is what I would do:
Wash towels on the hottest setting your machine has. If you have a front loader that will let you Sanitize, do that. Also wash on the hardest, longest setting your machine offers.
For example, I would put only towels in the machine and then set it to Heavy Duty wash on the Heavy setting, using Hot wash/Cold rinse.
I’d use a capful of detergent measured to the top fill line. No fabric softener (it will only mask the smell). Use a full scoop of Oxi-Clean and white vinegar in the final rinse.
If at all possible, dry them in direct sunlight. It’s the vinegar and the sun that is going to help get the smell out the most.
You might have to do this whole process twice to get the bulk of the smell out…but it will be worth it.
Let me know if you need any of this explained in more detail (the vinegar, etc). I’m happy to!
-Lauren 🙂
How much vinegar do you use with the full scoop of oxi clean.
I was having this problem a while back and did the following things and I no longer have this problem:
First I cleaned our washer (hubby got it one year before we got married and we just had our first wedding anna and it has NEVER been cleaned). It was pretty easy to do.
Then I started washing all my towels on the heavy duty setting with hot wash cold rinse. I use a washing soap with baking soda in it too. I start to water put in the soap put in towels, then add 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to it too. (I have also been told that you can just add it to the rinse cycle but I dont do that since I dont have all day to sit by the washer and wait for that cycle lol)
I have also read that you should make sure that you are not putting in too many towels in the washer at one time or using too much washing soap can cause this too.
Then I take the towels out of the washer as soon as they are done washing. Do the same if you are drying them in the dryer. Also in the dryer make sure that you are using the hottest heat you can.
thats what i do, and it works for me.
A cup (or two) of white vinegar along with detergent. Double rinse. Despite vinegars potency, it is amazing at canceling other unpleasant odors, simultaneously killing bacteria. I use it for so many personal and household remedies.
YES! I agree that vinegar is often the cure all!
Thanks for stopping by today 🙂
I love the look of towels folded the way you described. But to fit nicely in my cupboard, I have to fold it in half instead of thirds (bringing the bottom all the way up instead of one-third the way). 🙁 Maybe the next house I live in will have cupboards or closets that afford the lovely way you have folded. Truely, I have a soft-spot in my heart for towels folded so nicely.
